“I want you to investigate my wife.”

The private investigator’s office was located in a dilapidated strip mall. The original grocery store, apparently an A&P from the faded bricks where the letters were removed years ago, was currently a flea market.

He told me he picked this location for his office specifically because his clientele, people with money like me, had no reason to venture into this part of town. Unless they were looking to solve a particular problem.

“You think she’s cheating on you? Right?” His voice was deep. Just what I’d expect from a big black guy, with a black name like Marcus Jackson, who used to play college football. He even had a few tryouts up in Canada for the CFL, he told me. Like I cared about any of that. I wasn’t looking for him to do anything physical.

“I don’t think she’s cheating on me. I know she is.” I slide a recent photo of my wife across the old scratched desktop. “All I want from you is proof that she’s been intimate with another man.”

The big black guy picks up the photo and holds it at eye level. He stares at it like he’s committing it to memory. “I see why you’re concerned,” he says. “She’s a knockout.”

“She was in Playboy when she was in college,” I proudly told him. “Fully clothed,” I added. Also proudly. You know she was attractive if Playboy wanted her in the magazine with clothes on back then.

Of course, if she had been photographed nude I never would have married her in the first place. It would have been too disgraceful. Too humiliating. My wife’s body was for my own pleasure. Not for the pleasure of any slob who scraped together a couple of bucks for a magazine.

“What other evidence do you have so far?” He slid the photo into a new Manila folder.

I shift in my seat. This chair is so uncomfortable. “Well, nothing yet. That’s why I’m coming to you.”

Jackson just stares at me from across his desk. He doesn’t say anything and the silence is excruciating.

“A husband just knows sometimes. I’m sure you understand. Especially in your line of work.”

He inhaled deeply and sat back in his chair. He’s such a big guy the chair wheezes in protest. “So you don’t have any texts or secret phones. Late night phone calls. New friends. Staying late for work. That sort of…”

“Oh Amy doesn’t work.” No wife of mine would have to stoop to that level. “She gets a weekly allowance.”

“Your wife gets an allowance?”

“She cannot be trusted,” I say as he stares at me. I don’t like being questioned. Especially by someone I’m looking to hire. But his size and his blackness intimidate me even when he’s sitting across the desk from me. “With money.”
